BEAUTY AND ZEN:
SUMI-E PAINTINGS BY MICHAEL HOFMANN
Sumi-e is traditional ink and brush painting that has its origins in China. Michael Hofmann is a resident of Kyoto, Japan, where he has studied for the last twenty six years as an apprentice to the respected sumi-e master, Gyokusei Jikihara, now 97 years old and regarded as one of the country's foremost painters.
Mr. Hofmann's work draws inspiration from nature and Eastern philosophy, and displays a warmth and vitality of spirit.
Michael Hofmann visited the Mountain Lake Worskhop in summer, 1998 and conducted a sumi-e painting workshop to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.
