The Armory Gallery in cooperation with the Mountain Lake Workshop of the Virginia Tech Foundation will organize a related art workshop by well-known contemporary French artist, Jackie Matisse, whose works in colorful paper and fabric have demonstrated movemented form in both airborne and underwater environments in documentary photographs and videos. This will be Jackie Matisse's first collaborative public workshop in the United States Jackie Matisse will visit Blacksburg for a period of eight-to-twelve days between (March 29 Ü April 10, 2002 and participate in a series of scheduled events during a nine-day Mountain Lake Workshop (March 31 ÜApril 8) that will introduce community members and university and public school students from Southwest Virginia to experiences in planned events constructing and painting paper sculpture and kites, making "hard" sculptural forms in Virginia Tech's Industrial Design Lab, and creating a "virtual" 3D environmental sculpture with the University Visualization and Animation Group in Virginia Tech's state-of-the-art virtual reality "Cave". All three activities will result in artworks that will be exhibited; the "Cave"piece may be electronically exported to other exhibition locations with appropriate facilities in the United States and around the world - such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
