Virginia Tech's Armory Gallery presented an exhibition of ink & brush paintings and the Mountain Lake Workshop organized a related art workshop by well-known contemporary Shanghai artist, Xiao Yan Gen, whose works adapt traditional techniques to modern interpretations of the Chinese landscape. Xiao Yan Gen's paintings have been extensively exhibited in China and in Europe. This exhibition and workshop followed closely upon Xiao Yan Gen's participation as a guest artist in Shanghai in Virginia Tech's Art & Design Study Abroad in Asia in May and June, 2000.

Xiao Yan Gen visited Blacksburg (Aug. 30 – Sept. 4) and participated in several activities of the Mountain Lake Workshop (Sept.1 - 3). His workshops introduced community members and area students to traditional Asian ink and single- brush painting, and paper and silk mounting techniques, as well as celebrated the “Year of the Dragon.”

*This exhibition was a featured presentation of the Blacksburg Summer Arts Festival 1994.
